From the controversies surrounding a country’s security measures to the exploitation of fans by criminal organizations, tournament organisers have been forced to adapt their strategies in response to ever-changing threats. This is a trend that seems likely to continue with 2026 and 2030 seeing the expansion of the tournament to include 48 teams.

The upcoming events are predicted to cause a rise in air travel with fans and teams travelling an estimated 2 billion miles. This will generate a substantial amount of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

In this article, we analyse a model that includes three predictor variables—population scale, national comprehensive sporting strength and football tradition—and two interaction variables—population size x traditional football culture and economic level x traditional football culture. The results suggest that the host’s experience of organising previous World Cups, as well as its overall national sporting strength (as measured by the number of Olympic Games medals), significantly contribute to the team’s World Cup performance. Furthermore, the study also suggests that the traditional football culture of a nation has a positive impact on its World Cup performance, whereas the economic level – as measured by GDP – has a negative effect on the country’s World Cup performance.
